Themed trail on Hauser Kaibling

Schafsinn Circular Trail

Every year in May/June, the sheep are driven up onto Hauser Kaibling. The shepherd or shepherdess always has an adventurous and eventful summer ahead of them, with a large number of interested visitors.

The project

Hauser Kaibling’s winter ski pistes spend the summer as lush green pastures for our sheep. This sustainable research project (for more information, please click here) is the natural summer environment for the happy and healthy Ennstal Valley Alpine Lamb, and an ecological first in the region, promoting valuable produce and healthy food.

A part of this project is the beautiful Schafsinn loop, a themed trail with information about sheep, around Hauser Kaibling’s radio tower.

The circular trail

After a quick gondola ride, you can walk around the Hauser Kaibling summit along the 5.6 km Schafsinn themed trail, with a walking time of 2 hours 25 minutes). This trail is perfect for everyone, easy-going walkers or hikers looking for more challenges. It has two parts: the longer one (1 h 45 min) is for the experienced walker, while the shorter one (45 min) is suitable for a stroll with a pram and/or pushchair.

With the SummerCard the Taueren-gondola is free, as well as the 8er Gondola & Quattralpina, whisking you up to the fresh mountain air and gorgeous panorama at 1870 metres, which will thrill you.

Hike the themed trail

Starting at the top station of the gondola, take the easier "left around" walking route to the Schafsinn info-box at the radio tower. Underneath Quattralpina chairlift’s top station, the path leads down to a bench with an info-desk, just above the lake, where you can enjoy the views and take your first rest.

From here, the path leads up to 1950 metres, taking you further towards the main chain of the Alps. Another bench invites you to rest before you continue the walk to the Schafsinn research station and, then, to the beautiful Kaiblingalm. To get back to the gondola top-station, simply follow the forest road. Before going back down, pop into one of the cosy restaurants or mountain huts for a drink and a bite to eat.

Strolling along (pram and pushchair suitable)

For an easier mountain experience, take the Schafsinn "right around" trail. Following the safe forest road, which is suitable for prams and pushchairs, until you reach the lovely Kaiblingalm.

Culinary hiking

For your culinary mountain treat, head to the authentic mountain huts of Krummholzhütte and the Berggasthof Scharfetter, which are right at the Tauern Gondola top station. Enjoy delicacies from the local Alpine lamb – or order in advance to tuck into the taste the real Schafbratl (roast lamb).
