Mountain huts in Styria

Enjoy a demanding hike in the Schladming-Dachstein region and the rest in one of the cosy mountain huts is the greatest reward. Enjoy tasty traditional Styrian delicacies with fantastic panoramic views.

Alpine huts on Hauser Kaibling

A perfect place to start and end hiking tours is the Berggasthof Scharfetter mountain restaurant. Enjoy stand-out Austrian cuisine of hearty traditional delicacies on the sun terrace. Or treat yourself to a glass of wine at the umbrella bar, where you can end your day taking in gorgeous views.

Go for an even more rustic experience at Krummholzhütte mountain hut. At the gondola’s top station, this cosy alpine lodge will load you up with regional treats in a comfy atmosphere. Try the Styrian Ennstal Valley Bratl – roast lamb – a specialty of the house.

Rustic Alpine huts

Most of the alpine huts open to hikers in Styria’s Schladming Dachstein region have been around for centuries. They were built with wood, which, over the decades, has become dark. While some of the huts do not even have running water, others, are very modern.

Originally, these huts were housing for the Sennen, the shepherds, who looked after the cattle herds and flocks of sheep, milked them and made butter and cheese.

Today, many of the huts welcome hikers and bikers for meals and even overnight stays. Tuck into some homemade dairy produce and enjoy the great taste.

Stay overnight at the Alpine huts

At some mountain huts, you can, on request, stay overnight. If you go for a multi-day hiking tour on the mountains, it is wise to plan daily walks that take you from mountain hut to mountain hut.

The accommodation at the Alpine huts is rather basic, with most offering just dormitories. But some places have also small rooms for families.

The  Gästehaus Scharfetter mountain restaurant and the  Krummholzhütte mountain hut, for example, offer rooms and dormitories for different-sized groups, and provide half board. Additionally, the Berggasthof Scharfetter offers an apartment house for up to four people  (45 m²).

The best moment when you stay overnight in an alpine hut is waking up. Open the shutters and enjoy the wonderful view. Fill up with a hearty mountain-hut breakfast then set off on the next stretch of your hike.
